Bone Densitometry

Contra-indications

Examination is contraindicated if absorption of a contrast medium within 3 days prior to examination

Precautions

None

Conduct of examination

The patient is lying on her/his back, legs bent on a foam support, arms along the body.

The x-ray tube moves over the patient during radiation emission.

The examination lasts about 5 minutes.

The radiation dose is very low (10 times lower than that of a lungs X-ray).

Equipment

Type :“LUNAR PRODIGY” BONE DENSITOMETRY

Supplier :General Electric Healthcare

Technology

Bone densitometry or biphotonic Absorbsiometry is a technique using two beams of X-rays of different energies (high and low).

Calculation of X-ray absorption is used to determine the bone density of the skeleton.

The calculation is based on the analysis of the lumbar vertebrae and the femoral neck.

If in doubt, the examination is completed by the analysis of left wrist.

What is the contribution of BMD ?

BMD allows you to measure the degree of bone mineralization.
